This article is an overview of the StringBean mobile app and the screens you'll use most. It covers:

  • Bottom navigation bar
  • Dashboard (home screen)
  • Tasks list
  • Create new (Tasks and Daily Notes)
  • Scanner (QR, barcode, NFC)
  • Menu
  • Connection status and banners
  • Searching, filtering, and sorting
  • Working offline

Bottom Navigation Bar

The bottom navigation bar is your primary way to move around the app. It gives you access to the following:

Item

Description

Dashboard

Opens the home screen β€” an at-a-glance view of work that needs attention.

Tasks list

Opens a list of Tasks and Daily Notes you can act on.

Create new

Create a new Task or Daily Note.

Scanner

Scan QR codes, barcodes, or NFC tags.

Menu

Access secondary features like the Workflow Library, Locations, Users and Teams, Storage, Sync, and Account Settings.

Dashboard

The Dashboard is the home screen of the StringBean mobile app. It gives you a quick view of what's happening in your organization and what needs your attention.

My Tasks

At the top you'll see four tiles summarizing your current assignments:

  • Due Soon (orange) β€” Assignments due within the next 48 hours
  • In Progress (blue) β€” Assignments you've started but haven't finished
  • Overdue (red) β€” Assignments past their due date; shows how old the oldest one is
  • Exceptions (brown) β€” Issues flagged during workflows that need your attention

Tap any tile to jump straight to your assignment list, already filtered to show just those items.

My Performance

Below your tasks, you'll see how many assignments you've completed:

  • Today β€” How many you finished today
  • This Week β€” Your weekly count, with a comparison to last week
  • This Month β€” Your monthly count with a percentage trend vs. the same period last month
Recent Activity

A scrolling feed of your latest work β€” both assignments and daily notes. Pull down on the screen to refresh. The feed is ordered by most recent creation date.

Tasks list

The Tasks list shows the work you can act on. A dropdown at the top filters the view by type:

  • All tasks β€” everything assigned to you or your teams.
  • Tasks (Service Requests) β€” task assignments based on a StringBean template.
  • Daily Notes β€” daily notes and exceptions (previously called Incidents).
  • Vendor Check-in/out β€” vendors that have scanned a QR code for the check-in template.

You can filter, sort, and search within each view. Tapping an item opens the full detail view, where you fill out Beans to do the work.

Create new

Tap Create new in the bottom navigation bar to start a new item. You can create:

  • Task β€” a task or assignment to be completed using a StringBean template.
  • Daily Note β€” a record of an issue, safety event, or observation.

Scanner

The Scanner lets you use your device's camera and NFC reader to quickly look up or create work tied to physical items and locations.

It supports:

  • QR codes β€” typically posted at a location, on equipment, or on a printed Task to check-in.
  • Barcodes β€” for inventory items, equipment, and assets.
  • NFC tags β€” tap your phone against a tag to open the linked record.
How to scan
  1. Tap the Scan tab in the bottom bar.
  2. Choose your scan mode: QR Code, Barcode, or NFC Tag.
  3. Point your camera at the code or hold your device near an NFC tag.

What happens after a scan depends on the code:

  • A QR code linked to a location opens that location's details.
  • A QR code linked to a vendor check-in opens the check-in screen.
  • Barcodes and NFC data are captured for use in your workflows.

Note: Camera permission is required the first time you scan. NFC scanning requires NFC-capable hardware.

The Menu groups features you'll use less often than the bottom bar:

Item

Description

Workflow Library

Browse the StringBean templates published by your organization.

Locations

View client sites and buildings.

Users and Teams

View people and teams in your organization.

Storage

View and manage files attached to records.

Sync

Manually trigger a data refresh.

Account Settings

Your profile, notification preferences, and other personal app settings.

Note: Menu item labels can be customized by your organization using Anchors (found in Settings).

Banners and Connection Status

What the banner at the top means

You may notice a colored banner at the top of the screen:

  • Orange banner β€” you're connected to live data. Any changes you make are real.
  • Dark green banner β€” you're connected to a sandbox. Changes won't affect live data.

Tap the ? icon on the banner for more details.

Connection status indicator

A small dot shows your real-time connection status:

  • Green dot β€” Connected and syncing normally.
  • Orange dot β€” App is trying to reconnect.
  • Red dot β€” Connection failed. Tap to retry.
  • Gray dot β€” Offline. Your work will sync when you reconnect.

Searching, Filtering, and Sorting

Most list screens support a search bar, a filter screen (with date ranges, locations, status, and more), and a sort button. Filters are remembered between sessions, so clear them when you no longer need them.

See Searching, Filtering, and Sorting on Mobile for the full list of filters and sort options.

Working Offline

The StringBean app keeps working when you lose internet β€” view assignments, complete tasks, take photos, and create daily notes all work offline. Anything you do offline syncs automatically when you reconnect.

A few things still require internet: signing in, issuing workflows from the Team or StringBean libraries (favorites still work offline), and loading data you haven't seen before.

See Working Offline for the full list of what works offline, how syncing works, and what to do if something gets stuck.
